How CROME scholarships work: who can apply, what you receive, and what happens next

CROME scholarships help students from Ellis County pay for the step after high school. This guide answers the questions we hear most often. The current award amount, the deadline and the application itself are always on the scholarship site, which is the source of truth for each cycle.

Who can apply?

High school seniors and current college students across Ellis County are welcome to apply. All majors and all accredited institutions qualify, including trade schools and certificate programs. Applications are reviewed on academic achievement, financial need, your goals, and your connection to CROME’s mission.

You do not need to be accepted to a school before you apply. You can apply while you are still deciding. Acceptance to an accredited institution is needed before scholarship funds are paid out.

Does it cost anything?

No. Applying for a CROME scholarship is free. Award amounts and deadlines are published for each application cycle on the scholarship site.

What does the application ask for?

The application has seven steps: personal information, academic background, financial need, your CROME connection, essay responses, additional information, and a final review. You choose at least one essay prompt and follow the word requirements shown in the application. Financial information is optional.

• Allow about 5 to 10 minutes if your essays are already written, or 60 to 90 minutes if you write them as you go.
• Have your academic records, school information and reference details ready.
• Your progress is saved to an account, so you can stop and come back on another device.

What have past recipients received?

In 2024, CROME awarded four scholarships of $500, $1,000, $1,000 and $2,000 to students heading to Texas State University, Tarleton State University, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Texas. You can read about the 2024 recipients. Across its first three years CROME has given more than $40,000 in scholarships.

When can I apply?

Applications open for a set window each year. When they are closed, the scholarship site shows the status at the top of the page and lets you leave an email address to be notified when the next cycle opens. If you have already applied, sign in to your student portal to check your application.
