Hello! I'm Alexia, and I'm honored to serve both as a pre-med mentor and a member of the advisory board here at C.R.O.M.E. After earning my degrees in Music Education and Psychology from the University of North Texas, and currently completing my M.S. in Medical Science, my path to medicine has been far from typical. My unique journey from a first-generation immigrant to a non-traditional pre-med student has equipped me with diverse experiences and perspectives.
Beyond guiding students through the intricacies of medical school preparation, I bring my insights to shape C.R.O.M.E.'s direction and strategies as an advisor. Hello! I’m Zabian Zuniga, proud to guide aspiring minds as a Pre-Dental Mentor here at C.R.O.M.E. Native to Ennis, Texas, I’m on my own journey toward becoming an orthodontist, currently studying Chemistry at the University of Texas. My path is rich with lessons learned both in and outside the classroom, including my contribution to our community through the donation of the iconic ENNIS letters signs downtown—a landmark where countless memories are made.
This gesture reflects my belief in giving back and creating lasting impacts, principles I carry into my mentorship role. Hi, I'm Sydney! Growing up in Ennis, I learned the value of community involvement early on. My passion for helping others blossomed during my time at Baylor University, leading me to pursue a Masters of Social Work with a specialization in Community Practice, which I completed in 2020. For the past five years, I've worked in various roles within the non-profit sector, gaining invaluable insights from the clients I've served.
I believe in the value of alternative career pathways, having seen many friends and family thrive through vocational training and trade schools. Currently, I work with community members of all ages, helping them on their career journeys. Whether it's obtaining a CDL, learning Python, or becoming a medical assistant or HVAC technician, I'm dedicated to providing support with job applications and interviews.I'm excited to be part of your journey as you become future leaders in your communities.

I'm Madi Maxwell, C.R.O.M.E.'s Social Media Director and mentor in biology and nursing. Graduating from Texas State University in 2023 with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Medical Humanities, I'm now advancing my nursing studies at UT Health San Antonio, aspiring to specialize in midwifery. My journey embodies the challenge and reward of healthcare education, fueling my drive to mentor the next generation.

Andy R. Chavez

Hello! I'm Andy R. Chavez, and I am honored and privileged to become a mentor at CROME. Graduating from EHS in 2018, I had the privilege of having multiple classes with Claudio, and more importantly knowing him as a friend. I am excited to join CROME and look forward to helping the Ennis community in Claudio's honor.
After high school I went into community college, but just after 1 year I realized I wanted something different for myself. Fast forward to 2025, I've found myself in the music industry, real estate development/sales, and new home construction. Through these ventures, I have learned the importance of creating lifelong relationships and helping others achieve their goals.
I look forward to becoming a CROME mentor, and excited to help out our community.
Cody Huffman
Legal Mentor · Attorney at Law
Cody serves as a policy attorney at the Texas Indigent Defense Commission. Cody resides in Austin, Texas, where his background in practice was criminal defense and family law. A native to the Rio Grande Valley, Cody left home to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism with double minors in Writing and Spanish from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He then attended St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas where he received his Juris Doctorate in 2023.
At St. Mary’s, Cody was a part of the Criminal Justice Clinic as a student attorney representing indigent defendants at the trial and appellate level. He was also a member of the nationally ranked Advocacy Team where he competed in negotiation, mediation, and client counseling competitions. Cody sharpened his analytical and drafting skills during his time as a Staff Writer on The Scholar: St. Mary’s Law Review for Race & Social Justice, and is a published author with the journal. As a law student, Cody co-founded the Wrongful Conviction Series and sought out many pro-bono opportunities which culminated in him receiving the Law School Dean’s Award, the Marianist Service to Community Award, and the St. Mary’s School of Law Pro Bono Public Service Certification.
When Cody is not working on capitol grounds, he’s exploring new coffee shops and eateries with his dog, Dolly, and takes up volunteer opportunities with the Austin Young Lawyers Association, the Human Rights Campaign Austin chapter, and serves as the chapter alumni advisor for Lambda Chi Alpha at Texas State University.
Lindsey Barak
Nursing Mentor
Hi everyone! I’m Lindsey Barak, and I’m so excited to serve as a mentor with CROME. I’ve been a nurse for over 25 years, my journey began at Navarro College, where I earned my Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). From there, I continued my education through the University of Texas at Arlington, earning both my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing Education. I have since completed my Doctor of Education in Nursing Education from National University.
My nursing background is in Women’s Services and Pediatrics, but for the past seven years, I’ve been a full-time educator at Navarro College, where I currently serve as a Professor for the RN-BSN Program and Assistant Program Director for the ADN & RN-BSN programs. Nursing is truly my passion, and I love helping future nurses discover their confidence, purpose, and professional voice.
In addition to teaching, I volunteer as a mentor with Mentors Care for Ennis ISD and Mentor Me for Navarro College. I find so much joy in supporting students both personally and professionally as they work toward achieving their goals.
Outside of work, I’ve been married to my husband, Philip, for 25 years. We have two amazing kids (both pursuing their own college degrees) and a house full of animals that always keep things interesting! In my free time, I love reading, spending time with my family, and bird watching!
Ulises Herrera
Financial Services Mentor
I’m an Ennis, TX native and part of the 2018 graduating class of Ennis High School. I went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in General Studies with a focus on Science from Navarro College in 2020. Currently, I work as an independent agent in Financial Services, specializing in life insurance and retirement planning, and I’ve been building my agency since 2020.
Over the years, being in financial services has allowed me to educate others on financial literacy, especially in the lower middle class demographic, which I believe is a noble industry. I am also proud to be part of the journey with CROME, which continues to help students at EHS and support the legacy of my good friend Claudio. It’s an honor to be part of this journey and help in any way I can to make sure his legacy lives on.
When I’m not working, I enjoy working on myself and personal development to strive to be the best I can be, which helps me stay balanced and motivated. My ultimate goal is to continue making a positive impact in my community through both my professional and personal endeavors.
Maria Perez

Hello! I’m Maria Perez, and I’m honored to join CROME as a mentor. I had the privilege of being friends with Claudio, and I’m excited to contribute to his legacy through this program.
I graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in International Business and Economics. Since then, I’ve been working in the finance industry, where I build genuine relationships and tailor solutions to help clients achieve their financial goals. Currently, I’m pursuing my MBA in International Business at Southern New Hampshire University, set to graduate in January 2026. Additionally, I’m studying for the LSAT, with plans to start law school this upcoming fall to pursue a career in corporate law.
As a first-generation student, I made it my goal to engage in various extracurricular activities to network and connect with like-minded individuals who could support me on my journey. Through these experiences, I realized the power of community, and I’m committed to giving back to Ennis—pouring into the community that provided me with a strong foundation for success.
I had the opportunity to serve as an AVID tutor at Ennis High School during my undergraduate studies, and I also worked as a Resident Advisor at SHSU. These experiences have fueled my passion for supporting and encouraging the younger generation to thrive academically and personally by fostering an environment built on trust and genuine connection. I’m excited to partner with students and empower them to achieve their goals!
Lisly Armendariz
Health Science Mentor
Hi everyone! My name is Lisly, and I was born and raised in Ennis, Texas. I’m currently a senior at Texas State University pursuing a B.S. in Health Sciences with a double minor in Pre-Dental Studies and Business Administration. Texas State has given me the opportunity to challenge myself, embrace new experiences, and grow into a more confident student and future healthcare professional.
Coming from a family of immigrants and being a first-generation college student, I understand firsthand how overwhelming the journey through higher education can feel. These experiences have motivated me to embrace leadership opportunities and mentorship roles, with the goal of helping others navigate similar challenges. I aspire to use my background and education to not only pursue a career in dentistry but also to give back to my community by supporting and uplifting others along the way.
I’m excited to join CROME and be part of a community that empowers students to chase their goals with confidence. I’ve found purpose in creating spaces where others feel supported, and I look forward to sharing my own experiences to guide students who may be facing similar challenges. Through CROME, I hope to encourage others to believe in their potential, overcome obstacles, and feel confident as they take the next steps toward their future.

Sara Novy
Healthcare Mentor & Advisor
I am a postdoctoral associate and research scientist at a large children’s hospital in Houston, Texas. Here, I conduct clinical research in children with congenital heart disease and genetic conditions.
My background training is in public health and statistics, where I used data from large groups to better understand how to eradicate disease. My overarching goal is to improve outcomes, reduce disease and inform health policy for children in the US.
In my job, I’m lucky to be able to partner with physicians, families and patients, and other experts to understand how to improve health for children across the US.
I’m proud to partner with CROME in their mission and am excited to see how young people from the Lone Star State and Ennis transform the world through their own talents!
